America came forward to help Pakistan

There was a time during the Indo-Pak war when America came forward to help Pakistan. The US had sent the Seventh Fleet of its Navy stationed near Japan to the Bay of Bengal to help Pakistan. The reason behind this was also said to be not good relations between the then US President Nixon and Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. At the time of 1971, the relationship between America and Pakistan was considered very strong. America had given many sophisticated weapons to Pakistan. The PNS Ghazi of the Pakistani Navy was also a state-of-the-art submarine built by the US. It was sent to destroy India's aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. However, the Indian Navy sank it near Visakhapatnam and broke the back of the Pakistani Navy.

What was the specialty of the Seventh Fleet?

The US Navy's Seventh Fleet consisted of the USS Enterprise, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, and other destroyers. This fleet was considered one of the most powerful naval fleets in the world at that time. The USS Enterprise had the ability to travel from one corner of the world to another without needing to refuel. It was much larger than India's aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. The US had told that behind sending this fleet to the Bay of Bengal, to bring out the American citizens trapped in Bangladesh. However, later it was revealed that the purpose of this fleet was to put pressure on the Indian Army fighting in the then East Pakistan.

How did Russia help?

After the news of the 7th Fleet of the US Navy moving towards India, India had sought help from Russia (erstwhile the Soviet Union). A few months before the start of the war, India signed a Soviet-India Treaty of Peace, Friendship, and Cooperation with Russia. Seeing the US Navy moving towards the Bay of Bengal, Russia sent its nuclear-capable submarines and destroyers from the Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean to help India.

Pakistani Army Surrendered

On 16 December 1971, before the US Seventh Fleet could reach the Bay of Bengal to help Pakistan, the Pakistani army surrendered to India. However, the Russian Navy did not give up the pursuit of the Seventh Fleet until it returned.

In the United Nations Security Council, Russia also gave, along with

many other countries including America stood in support of Pakistan during the ongoing war between India and Pakistan. America tried to help Pakistan by bringing a ceasefire resolution in the United Nations Security Council. However, Russia helped India by vetoing this proposal. For this reason also Russia is considered as India's evergreen friend.
